James M. Fitts, MD, PhD
Fellowship-Trained Cardiologist
Born to help people help themselves.
“Back in high school, I was a volunteer counselor for Teen Line. I helped troubled teenagers who called in with serious problems concerning relationships, family, school and such. When I went to Duke, I became an electrical engineering major because I enjoyed the sciences. I also kept up with my volunteer work and helped out at the local VA hospital in the cancer unit, spending a lot of time with terminally ill patients.
“This is when I realized that what I really wanted to do for the rest of my life was to help people who are sick. After earning my BSc in engineering, I enrolled at New York Medical College to pursue my goal of becoming a doctor. After graduating with my MD, I went into cardiology as I felt that this was a field where I could make a big difference in people’s lives.
“I am very glad that I ultimately chose medicine over engineering. Medicine appeals to my scientific mind and enables me to work with the ‘engineering-related’ equipment utilized in nuclear testing and echocardiography. More importantly, medicine enables me to help people get healthier.”
